Life is lived onwards but understood backwards. Indeed, there are lot of things to learn in history, more so, with the people for whom you own your heritage. Those people whom you’ve never ever heard of, the forgotten souls of your great, great, great, great grandparents were the reason why you are on earth right now. Because of this, many people’s interests were captured on studying their own roots, their genealogy.

Over the years, the supreme records that serve as the best research tools on the study of genealogy are held in microfilm reels. The members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints were the major collectors of family trees as part of their religion and belief. Because of this, most family researchers seek for their help in tracing their line of ancestors.

Aside from the records of the Mormons, there also other excellent sources to find names of the people. One of which is the newspaper. Newspapers can contain articles about or obituaries of your relatives who lived decades ago. Funeral cards are also powerful tools for researchers. These could be found from the closets of your parents or libraries. Also, you can interview your living relatives about the names of your ancestors, their stories, and their way of living during the time. Nevertheless, all these sum up to the laborious chore of studying your genealogy. And to add to the difficulty is the financial concern. The old methods of tracing the family genealogy are undoubtedly expensive. Tracing the genealogy requires an investment. The introduction of internet to the world of genealogy is a great technological spec.

Because of the online genealogy system, all the records and files from the primary documents, to newspaper articles and obituaries down to the funeral cards were all embedded to the vast sea of knowledge. This online system allows the researchers to an easy access to the resources. All the capabilities and authentications of the recorded documents are posted at the internet. And everyday, more sets of information are entered to the web to keep its record updated and reliable.

There are free genealogy search engines that require only certain information such as surname, name, and/or location of your ancestry. In an instant, you can readily find your line of ancestry. However, if you are not satisfied with the results reported by search engines, you can conduct further study of your genealogy. To help you in this quest, you can post at the online message board the specific surname that you are tracing. In this manner, you will be able to meet fellow genealogists who are working on the same surname.

For genealogists, the online research for resources is beneficial. It helps cut the cost of expenses and the time allotted for genealogy research. Aside from this, they can share their documents with other researchers online. The exchange of information speeds up the tracking of heritage.

While you seek to learn more about many things, don’t you think it is also fulfilling to know your roots?

The study to trace family lineage is termed as genealogy. It entails for you to collect the names of your living and departed relatives. Additionally, you are to establish the relationship among every member on primary, secondary or incidental facts. An individual studying genealogy is referred to as a genealogist.

A genealogist who wishes to seek familial information must have an understanding of genealogical facts. The facts you need to be familiar with and study are the following:

Family Name

The family name (surname or last name) serves as an important tool in genealogic research. For some genealogists, it serves as the stepping stone to start the search.

Commonly, a family name originated from the name of the father itself, the location of your ancestors, the employment of the individual, and/or the nickname of the individual itself is needed.

To locate your ancestors’ family name, you may want to look at documents of birth, marriage and death certificates. Census returns and trade directories are also helpful.

Location

Locating the place of your ancestors is an essential part in finding out your lineage. To locate the place names, you need to search into vital, land, court, probate and estate records.

Sometimes the place’s name is puzzling due to the order of location being cited. Hence, if you are starting with your own family tree, it is important to follow the standard place name writing protocol. You need to record names of places from the smallest to the largest location. For example, the town should come first before the county. After listing the county, the state will follow and country is the location last entry.

Given Name

Long-ago, the given name is not duly important in genealogy study. However, given names or first names are now considered as an essential tool in a genealogy study and search.

Given names are said to be a representation of deliberate choice of parents. Some of the common naming patterns are:

? First name of a son obtained from the paternal grandfather’s name
? First name of a daughter obtained from the maternal grandmother’s name

Date

Dates in genealogical search vary.  It may pertain to the birth, baptism, marriage or the death date of either your living and deceased relatives.

The above-mentioned dates can be found in the following records: vital, church, bible, military, and census. Newspapers are also a tool for you to be able to find dates. Other helpful tools are Social Security Death and International Genealogical Indexes.

Employment

The type of job your ancestors have is a good tool to help you in your family lineage quest. Aside from knowing what your ancestors did for a living, the kind of occupation of your ancestors will also help you to distinguish between two similar surnames.
You can find the type of employment in the birth, marriage or death certificates of your ancestor. Other sources are the city directories, obituary records, and the Social Security Administration.

Family name, location, given name, date and employment are five key factors that will serve as a great help for you as you trace you family lineage. It is important however, that as you find out facts regarding the five factors to take into account its reliability.

Almost every adoptee, no matter how much they love their adopted family, experiences a twinge when faced with a family tree chart. Some are unsure whether to trace their adopted family tree, their birth family, or both - and how to handle the differentiation between their multiple families. Others, who for various reasons have no access to their own personal family history prior to their adoption, find themselves haunted - by the family whose names will never be documented in their genealogy, and the family tree somewhere in the world with an empty space on the branch where their name should be.
While some people insist that genealogies are only meant to be genetic, most agree that the purpose of a family tree is to represent the family - whatever that family might be. In the case of adoption, the ties of love are generally stronger than ties of blood, so it is absolutely appropriate for an adoptee to research and create a family tree for their adopted family.

Tracing Your Adopted Family Tree
Tracing the family tree of your adoptive parents works pretty much the same way as tracing any other family tree. The only real difference is that you should clearly indicate that the link is through adoption. This in no way reflects on the bond between you and your adopted parent. It just makes it clear for others who may view your family tree that it is not a bond of blood.

Tracing Your Birth Family Tree
If you’re one of the lucky ones who knows the names and details of your birth parents, then tracing your birth family tree will follow the same path as any other family history search. If, however, you do not know anything about your birth family, then you will need to consult a variety of sources - your adoptive parents, reunion registries, and court records for nonidentifying information that may be available to you.

Options for Combined Family Trees

Since the traditional genealogy chart does not accommodate adoptive families, many adoptees create their own variations to accommodate both their adoptive family as well as their birth family. Any way you choose to approach this is just fine, as long as you make it clear which relationship links are adoptive and which are genetic - something that can be done as simply as using different colored lines. Other options for combining your adopted family with your birth family on the same family tree include:

  • Roots & Branches - A slight variation of the typical family tree is a good choice for someone who knows little about their birth family, or who doesn’t really want to trace their genetic family history. In this case you can include the names of your birth parents (if known) as the roots, and then use the branches of the tree to represent your adopted family.
  •

  • Double Family Trees - A good option if you want to include both your adoptive family and your birth family in the same tree is to use one of several variations on the “double” family tree. One option includes a trunk where you record your name with two sets of branching tops - one for each family.

In some countries, many people believe that in order to achieve all the things that you want in life, you must know your roots. People who don’t look back to where they came from can’t reach their destination. Well, it’s up to you if believe in such sayings.

For many individuals, life is more enriched if they know their roots and who they really are; and your ancestry is not just about names. This is your family’s blood line passed on to many generations. Because of this knowledgeable fact, millions of individuals are trying to trace their family’s roots through genealogy.

When you’re trying to make your own family tree, it would be much easier to have genealogy forms. Genealogists use two basic forms to record all their ancestral information and these are family group sheets and pedigree charts. These forms help people like you in keeping track of all information that you find regarding your family’s history in a standard format that can be easily read and understood. The forms are recognized by all genealogists around the globe. The software programs of genealogy forms are all standard.

Pedigree Chart

Most people use pedigree chart. This form starts with you. It then branches out back to display your direct ancestral line. Most of the pedigree charts that you can find cover about four generations with spaces included so that you can enter important dates, marriage, place or birth, and death.

The standard format of a pedigree chart is only eight and a half by eleven inches. There are people who want larger forms and it is also possible to obtain such large forms. These are called ancestral charts, and you can enter more than four generations. However, this kind of form is often not used.

If you want to do more than four generations, you can still make use of the standard form; just make sure that you put reference numbers so that it will be easier for you to follow your family tree.

Family Group Sheet

Another common genealogy form is called the family group sheet. This kind of form focuses more on the family as a single unit. The sheet also has spaces for the name of the couple, their children (if any), and fields to write down the birth, marriage, death, and even burial places of the family members. Lines are included for the children’s spouses if they get married, along with sections for sources and comments.

This form is one of the most important tools in genealogy because there is room for your ancestor’s children and their spouses. The collateral lines are very important when you’re tracing a family tree.

These forms will work best if they are used together. Once you include a marriage on the pedigree chart, you must enter it on the family sheet. The first form only offers a quick glance-look of your tree, but the latter offers further details for each generation of ancestors.

Tracing your roots has never been this easy. If you want to start with your own family adventure, do so now and don’t forget to get both the forms mentioned earlier. These are necessary to make your family tree easier and more specific. Get a copy of the forms on the net and happy tracing.

Details of nearly 1 and a half million trials that took place in England and Wales from the late 18th and 19th centuries including a Jack The Ripper suspect and a would be assassin of Queen Victoria have been put online by the Genealogy Website   The register includes details of the crime, the full name and date of birth of the accused, the location of the trial and details of the judgement passed. During this period of UK History, almost 2 thirds of people tried for their crimes received terms of imprisonment and nearly one in ten were either transported overseas or sentenced to death. The collection contains details of 900,000 sentences of imprisonment, 97,000 transportations and over 10,000 executions (including a boy aged 14). Crimes that carried the death penalty included stealing anything worth more than 5 shillings (about £30 today), theft of livestock, poaching from a rabbit warren, or cutting down trees. Another crime that carried the death penalty was being caught at night with a blackened face, as it was assumed to mean that the person concerned was a burglar. By the mid 1800s executions had become a public spectacle, with people coming from miles away to see hangings. The more wealthy visitors would even hire the balconies of houses and pubs to get a better view. Some notorious criminals in the collection include Dr Thomas Neill Cream, a Jack the Ripper suspect who was sentenced to death in 1892  for the poisoning of several people; George Lyon, an inept highwayman, whose pistol failed to fire whilst he attempted to rob a coach in the rain as he had allowed his gun powder to get wet. A further two notorious criminals were: Isaac ‘Ikey’ Solomon, believed to be the inspiration behind the Dickens Character ‘Fagan’ and Roderick McLean, who attempted to assassinate Queen Victoria with a pistol at Windsor Castle.   For the full details of how to gain access to these Historic Criminal Records go to

Information is very important when researching for your genealogy. There are lots of resources wherein you can take all the benefits for free. But without any guidelines you cannot create a clear research path. There are four simple steps in finding genealogy information.

1. Collect useful information from recognized relatives. This is the basic rule for genealogy research. Keep a healthy skepticism when you are finding for records. There are instances that published records may achieve a legitimacy or unrealistic status. Never also assume that published information on the internet is correct. You need to verify it.

2. Communicate with someone who knows the history of your family through the internet. Genealogy research requires study and is time consuming. But you can utilize the power of the internet, besides it is fast and easy. You need to learn using emails, message boards, and email lists to open up communication with other researchers and relatives. Thus, significant online resources (census and statistics) are identified.

Remember that web pages are powerful because it has the ability to connect you to other web site links. Make sure that the websites have affiliate programs. These programs are paid so that they could link them to other useful sites. Typically, some websites are offering free access and free trial subscriptions.

Another website type that you can use is the one which provides family or surname search capability. This automatically generates links to other well known genealogy sites.

3. Do your research using free online databases. Genealogy website has two major types. First are internet websites which describe the methods of research as well as provide detailed sources on microfilms and papers. Second are internet websites which focus on searchable genealogy databases and online tools.

But problems may be encountered, small websites maybe not only your problem, but also major websites. Conflicts such as verifications of official records are not done. You may not be well acquainted of using the internet, and slow computer access can also be a problem. Just be patient.

4. Search for absurd records. You cannot trace your family history if the information you are getting is not clear. Start with record indexes. You need to study the descriptions listed on the records. The time and place of the census is very important.

If you are using the internet technology, you see the real images on the transcribed information. Oftentimes the images on the original record are manually transcribed by people. By reading the original document, once can transfer the information on the internet. Take for example the names of people. They are clearly written on the internet but also provide the original view of the document. In this way, you don’t have any difficulty in understanding hand writings that sometimes are not easily readable.

You don’t need to worry because the sources are made easy for you using even the latest technology. If you know what to do and how to do it, then your chances of a successful research is increased. One last reminder, never give up even if it gets difficult, what you have started can be just all wasted. But for sure, you don’t want any regrets.
